"MEDIATING DISABILITY-RELATED DISPUTES"
Objective: This interactive training provides
experienced mediators an opportunity to advance their skill in handling cases that
involve disability-related disputes under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
in regard to employment and public accommodation. This two-day training follows the
recommended curriculum from the "ADA Mediation Guidelines" and will result
in a certificate of completion from the Good Shepherd Mediation Program.
Objectives:
- Introduces thhe ADA Mediation Guidelines
- Addresses substantive law and procedural issues as it pertains to federal, state
and local ordinances, regulations, policies
- Introduces other supplemental information and related laws such as the Family
and Medical Leave Act, Rehabilitation Act and the EEOC guidelines
- Addresses ethical guidelines and dilemas in ADA mediation
- Shares information on disability resources and technical assistance
- Addresses capacity issues in a mediation session
- Discusses mediation techniques and methods
- Role-play common disability-related mediation disputes

Trainers
Cheryl Cutrona is the Executive
Director of Good Shepherd Mediation Program. She is a mediator, trainer, facilitator,
writer, and editor. She mediates for the PA Dept. of Education Office of Dispute
Resolution, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the U.S. Postal
Service. Ms. Cutrona holds a B.A. from Michigan State University and has received
her JD from Beasley School of Law at Temple University.
Donna Nutter Rodwell, Esq., an
Administrative Law Judge for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, is the
president of the Good Shepherd Mediation Program Board of Directors. She has also
been a volunteer mediator and trainer at GSMP since 1996. Her role at the EEOC is
to independently prepare for and conduct administrative hearings on federal sector
complaints of employment discrimination and render decisions.
